Do you know the ge/dge spelling generalization? • j will never come at the end of a word so you will use with -ge or -dge • if there’s a consonant or long vowel before the /j/ sound, use -ge. • if there’s a short vowel before the /j/ sound, use -dge. There are some cases where you will see -dge used in the middle of a multisyllabic word after a short vowel, like in budget. This usually happens when the second syllable uses the lazy schwa sound.
