We do not prune roses after August 1 and we stop our deadhead by Labor Day weekend. We let the rose go dormant on its own. Any pruning we do is going to encourage the rose to put out all kinds of new suckering growth, which is very unhealthy to do when the plant is trying to go to sleep for the winter. So in the fall, all we do is tie up any growth that we have to our structure to protect the plant from winter wind and snow. Then we come back in late winter early spring, and examine for diseased
