Sea ice has been melting around Antarctica all summer long and on February 21 the minimum extent of sea ice was reached, setting a record for the lowest amount recorded in the satellite record that began in 1979. This is the second consecutive year that a minimum extent record has been set. It should be noted that the trend over the entire record for Antarctic sea ice is just a 1% per decade decrease, which is not statistically significant.
