Two reigning English kings died on the toilet. Edmund Ironside, who ruled briefly in 1016 during the Danish invasions of Cnut the Great, died on November 30, 1016. The twelfth-century chronicler Henry of Huntingdon recorded that an assassin hidden in the privy cesspit stabbed the king from below as he sat down; the Norman writer Geoffrey Gaimar attributed the death to a booby-trapped crossbow concealed in the latrine.
