Fat over lean really refers to the ratio of oil in the paint mixture. So, the oil is the fat. I thin my paint down with odorless mineral spirits when I begin. Then I transition to no additional mineral spirits, which means the ratio of oil in the paint is higher. I think that it easier to think: thin to thick and dark to light.
