The Franklin Mountains of Texas (Spanish: Sierras de los Mansos [1]) are a small range 23 miles (37 km) long, 3 miles (5 km) wide that extend from El Paso, Texas, north into New Mexico. [2] The Franklins were formed due to crustal extension related to the Cenozoic Rio Grande rift.

What and where: A strenuous 8-mile hike taking you to the highest peak in El Paso located in the Tom Mays unit of the park. Description: This trail begins with a gradual incline through a rock slide, transitioning to a steady climb; it then meanders across the ridgeline, taking you to an elevation of 7,192 feet.

Towering above the city of El Paso is the Franklin Mountains State Park, the largest state park in an urban setting. Here you can hike rugged terrain in 37 square miles of desert wilderness, scrub vegetation and open space, with 125 miles of multi-use trails that are especially popular with mountain bikers.

Although the park is completely within the city limits of El Paso, a robust and diverse ecosystem of birds, reptiles and small mammals live here. If you are observant, you may catch a glimpse of mule deer, squirrels, coyotes, and perhaps one of the elusive mountain lions. The Franklins are an incredible bird-­watching site.

Head West, up and over the scenic Franklins and find the park entrance 7.5 miles down from the road's summit. If your plans change, please modify or cancel your reservation as soon as possible to allow someone else to enjoy the park. $5 per day, per person 13 and older. Office Hours are 8am to 4pm. All campsites are located at the Tom Mays Unit.

The Franklin Mountains are set in the largest urban park in the nation—Franklin Mountains State Park covers 24,247 acres (or 37 square miles), all of which is within El Paso city limits. Many well-preserved pictographs, made by Native Americans who inhabited this area for more than 12,000 years, can still be seen around the park.

The Franklin Mountains are near the far west tip of Texas. The south end is almost in Mexico, and they extend to the north into New Mexico. Go to El Paso and you can't miss the Franklin Mountains. El Paso is built mostly in the valleys beside the mountains.
