Supreme Court of India reserves order on plea to remove stray dogs from capital, sparking controversy and debate.

Laws such as the PCA Act, 1960, and the ABC Rules, 2023, form the cornerstone of dog protection in India. These rules ban the killing of healthy stray dogs, allowing euthanasia only in cases where a vet confirms a dog is terminally sick or mortally injured.

The problem of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR is because of "inaction" by local authorities, the Supreme Court said on Thursday, 14 August, while reserving its order on the interim plea seeking a stay on the 11 August direction passed by a two-judge bench of the apex court.
