Scottie Scheffler was tied for the lead when he returned from the delay and birdied three of his final four holes for a 66. Rickie Fowler was another shot behind, a big step toward making the Tour Championship for a shot at the FedEx Cup.

This will be the first time Cromie has caddied for Scheffler, but the pre-tournament time together should be beneficial — at least relative to an unexpected fill-in. Scheffler was never won a PGA Tour event without Scott as his caddie.

Scheffler, 29, is looking to put the finishing touches on another remarkable season that includes his third and fourth major wins at the PGA Championship and the Open Championship. He finished T33 at the BMW Championship last year in Colorado before winning the season-ending Tour Championship.
