Catholic Charities Fort Worth is accusing the federal government of unlawfully withholding more than $36 million in refugee resettlement funds, leading to staff layoffs and program cuts across Texas.

A lack of reimbursements since late January has forced local refugee service providers to furlough or lay off staff and cease services to refugees.

Catholic Charities Fort Worth, a nonprofit organization that serves as Texas’ refugee resettlement office, has sued the Trump administration, claiming the federal government has withheld more than $36 million in grants, leading its partners to lay off workers and close some offices.

Tens of thousands of refugees in Texas have not received federal assistance in weeks, leading to evictions in some cases, according to the lawsuit.

Catholic Charities alleges its has not been paid since the Trump Administration moved to freeze​ to federal funding, but later rescinded the order.

The lawsuit claims the Department of Health and Human Services is unlawfully holding back $36 million dollars for refugee resettlement.
