Most arrested in some big city immigration crackdowns had no criminal record, new data shows
In some cities where federal agents have conducted large-scale immigration operations that officials said would largely target criminals, more people without criminal records were detained in recent months.
The Trump administration is pausing all immigration applications, including requests for green cards, for people from 19 countries it deems high-risk. Tuesday’s announcement is part of sweeping immigration changes in the wake of the shooting of two National Guard members.
The process of applying for U.S. citizenship has for years been long and involved several steps, including an application, background checks, tests and an interview. One must first establish legal residency for a time, through visas, green cards or other forms of immigration relief that in themselves can be difficult to obtain.
More than 200 federal agents are expected to begin fanning out across New Orleans on Wednesday after the Department of Homeland Security announced the start of an immigration crackdown dubbed Operation Catahoula Crunch.
