Dramatic footage from onboard the cruise ship captures passengers stumbling to maintain balance as the ship tilts severely to one side

Cruise lines work hard to avoid storms, but the incident is not the only recent one of its kind. Parts of Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas flooded in January off the coast of South America following heavy rain and wind, and a Carnival Cruise Line ship was rocked by rough weather on its way back to the U.S. from a Bahamas cruise last year.

Speaking to CBS News, Jonathan Parrish, a passenger, said that he was watching a show in the ship’s theater when he felt the ship make a “hard right turn” followed by a second, “more intense” turn. The show was stopped and passengers left the theater.

A Royal Caribbean cruise ship experienced a frightening tilt during a sudden storm in the Atlantic Ocean. The ship, carrying thousands of passengers, leaned 45 degrees, causing furniture and dishes to overturn.

Following a delay in Yokohama for technical repairs, Royal Caribbean's Spectrum of the Seas has cancelled her next sailing.
