"This refinery is one of the 10 largest oil refineries in Russia in terms of design capacity and is involved in supplying the Russian occupatying army," the General Staff said in a statement.
Drone strikes were reported across multiple Russian regions, including Nizhny Novgorod, Smolensk, Tver, and Bryansk, igniting fires and triggering air defence responses. While there were no reported casualties, an oil refinery in the city of Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod, suffered significant damage.
A Russian official said a recent oil spill in the Black Sea was unprecedented and could have been avoided, highlighting the age of the vessels involved.
"The Volgograd oil refinery has been hit. It is one of the largest in Russia. Its design capacity is about 14 million tons of oil per year, making it the sixth-largest refinery in Russia. The refinery produces gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil, and aviation fuel," Kovalenko said.
Activists say the spill - caused after two ships ran were battered by a storm - could cover an area of 400 sq km.
