Canada's Leylah Fernandez defeated Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-2 for her fourth career WTA title at the Citi Open hardcourt tennis tournament on Sunday.

Most recently Fernandez beat the 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina at the 2024 Cincinnati Open, again in three sets. Fernandez spoke to the Tennis Channel after her victory at the Cincinnati Open 2024. The match set a precedent for what was to take place at the 2025 Washington Open, as Fernandez won another brutal three-set match.

Elena Rybakina has had a couple of concerning collapses this year and the latest came this past on Saturday, when the Kazakh blew a big lead and suffered a shock Washington semifinal loss.

Leylah Fernandez emerged victorious in a gripping battle with Elena Rybakina Saturday to reach the Mubadala Citi DC Open final in Washington, D.C. And she did so after Rybakina served for the match in the second set, leading to a dramatic encounter lasting three hours and 16 minutes.

Elena Rybakina will face Leylah Fernandez in the semi-final of Washington Open 2025. Rybakina is the favourite to win the title.
