Pacific Northwest residents braced for another round of heavy rain Wednesday after a powerful storm clobbered the region the day before, swelling rivers, closing roads and prompting high water rescues.
Even for a region used to heavy rain, this week’s system has forecasters on edge. The heaviest rain is expected into Wednesday.
Most of the western Pacific Northwest is under “relatively moderate” climate risk according to FEMA’s index. Climate migrants interviewed for this story said access to fresh water sources, less extreme temperatures, and lower flooding risks caused them to leave places like Minnesota and Louisiana for Washington.
