The Notre Dame Fighting Irish got left out of the College Football Playoff, and the decision hit like a cold slap across the sport. A 10-game win streak to close the regular season should have meant something.
Despite being known as an independent, Notre Dame has bounced around conferences in the last 40 years. The Irish initially joined the Midwestern City Conference in 1982 for all sports except football, basketball and hockey. This lasted for 13 years when Notre Dame joined the Big East in every sport, but football and hockey.
