Reports that deported migrants had faced mistreatment stirred an uproar in India ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Washington.

At least 104 Indian citizens were deported from the United States Tuesday night on a military aircraft, according to officials from India’s Punjab state, as US President Donald Trump makes stemming migration a top priority.

India has voiced concerns to the US regarding the deportation of illegal immigrants in shackles, describing the treatment as avoidable. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted that 487 presumed Indian citizens are subject to removal.

The flight appeared to be the first use of an American military aircraft to deport people to India, which is one of the top sources of illegal immigration to the United States.
