Captain Cook's Monument Kaumualii Highway, Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii Legendary British seafarer, discoverer, and adventurer Captain James Cook was, allegedly, the very first person of European descent to tread upon the Hawaiian Islands. This statue was erected in historical downtown Waimea to commemorate the time his ships, Discovery and Resolution, landed at Waimea Harbor in January, 1778. This monument is an exact replica of the original that stands proudly in Whitby, England, the town where Cook launched his career as a sailor. Despite the many perils he braved while at sea, the formidable captain unfortunately met his end on the Big Island of Hawaii over a trifling dispute about a rowboat.
